Astrolab's funding activity is flexible and purpose-built for Technology Incubation. Our approach allows strategic as well as portfolio investment to support the seeding and growth of our ventures through our fund facilities.
From inception Astrolab also provides insight and capital planning support to achieve our venture's desired future outcomes. Along our commercialisation pathway, ventures are also supported in leveraging a range of other funding and grant programmes (public and private sector) to further supplement their capacity.
The Investment Committee forms an integral part of Astrolab’s Venture commercialisation framework. The Committee members expertise and advice is available across the investment pipeline from review of new intellectual property through to launch and development of new Ventures.
The Investment Committee members come from a broad range of pertinent backgrounds. They comprise a range of deep experience sets relevant to early-stage investment. Astrolab’s ventures are aiming for success that relies on solid international, corporate and other partnerships, on the world stage. From seed/series-A investment, governance experience, through to M&A and strategic (global) partnerships, Astrolab’s Investment Committee leverages years of experience and wide networks to bring high quality insight to New Zealand’s deep-technology opportunities.

Principal – Obsidian Capital and Advisory
Mark is an experienced and well known finance and investment banking executive with more than 20 years of experience in the Australasian capital and financial markets (approximately 20 years with Goldman Sachs as an Executive Director in Investment Banking). Mark’s experience includes senior financial and strategy positions, equity and debt capital markets including M&A with transaction values exceeding NZD $8b, treasury and investor relations. Mark has advised and been intimately involved in many of New Zealand’s pre-eminent transactions including Meridian, Mighty River Power and Vector IPO’s. Mark is known for his robust ethics, analytical mind, inclusive approach to decision making, outstanding intellect and commercial acumen.

Principal of her own technology consultancy and currently holds a number of strategic and commercial advisory roles with high growth technology companies in various sectors including medical devices, biotechnology, smart infrastructure and foodtech sectors. Julia is passionate about helping high growth technology companies and innovative businesses to thrive on the global stage and investing in the future of a diversified New Zealand economy by nurturing start-ups and the next generation of world-class entrepreneurs.
She has extensive commercial experience at executive management and director level in both start-up and corporate organizations in the fields of Biopharmaceuticals and medical technology. She brings a strong background in business development, strategy, and capital raising in bioscience, across Asia Pacific, North America and Europe.

Venture Partner – Astrolab
Mario is an experienced business leader and entrepreneur who is active in the New Zealand investment community. Mario was Country Chairman and Regional GM for Shell, he has extensive governance and strategic experience and has served on many boards. Not only has he held significant corporate roles locally and internationally he has also developed many businesses and, in addition to his Advisory Group and coaching roles, he currently continues to be closely involved with his own businesses.
He brings strategic thinking and international business development at the highest levels combined with great local hands on experience. His networks span across many industries and geographies. Mario holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree and an MBA (honours)
Krishna has more than 25 years’ senior corporate executive experience working in large multi nationals in the IT&T industry across diverse global markets including Asia, US and Scandinavia.
He has a background and strong interest in companies looking to leverage the application of IoT and SaaS solutions. He has been a key contributor and advisor to major growth ventures including acquisitions and innovative start-ups. Krishna’s expertise includes finance, strategy/strategic growth, M&A, marketing, mobile, cloud, IoT, SaaS solutions, services and apps.
